n this literature review the topic of cyber-bullying among Irish primary school children will be discussed. As technology has taken over most people’s lives a lot of children are gaining access to the internet and to mobile phones. This is making it a lot easier for them to be cyber-bullied or to begin cyber-bullying another person. The following areas will break down the research, what type of cyber-bullying are there? What can a child do if they are being cyber-bullied and the anti-bullying programmes and supports in the Irish Education system will be discussed also.
Cyber-bullying is “an aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individual using electronic forms of contact, repeatedly over time against a victim who cannot easily defend himself or herself” (Barnardos, 2015). Electronic bullying or cyberbullying are methods of bullying which involve forms of bullying defined as “harassment using technology such as social websites (MySpace, Facebook, etc.), email, chat rooms, mobile texting and cameras, picture messages (including sexting), instant messages (IM) and or blogs” (Miller and Hufstedler, 2009). This shows that there’re numerous versions of cyber-bullying in the technological world. A research project by EU Kids online (O 'Neill et. al) found that a small percentage (6%) of 9-16 year olds in Ireland have been bullied online.
