Liv Silver Character Analysis

In evaluation of the character Liv Silver, I have found her to be both a girl who thrives off of curiosity and one who has an strong instinct to protect. Throughout the novel, Liv demonstrates an immense desire to constantly be discovering things. She does not like it when she is left in the dark. This is demonstrated first by Liv’s love of puzzles. One of her hobbies, mentioned several times throughout the novel, is studying codes and learning how to decipher them. Liv cannot help but be won over a little bit by Ernest’s gift of a codebook early on in the novel, despite her determination to dislike him. Liv also loves a mystery, even if it is in real life. Rather, it fascinates her. She immediately begins keeping a journal of how often the door appears, and whether it has anything to do with her wearing the sweater Grayson loaned her, which she was wearing the first time she went through it. She also repeatedly tries entering the other dreams, finding that most of the doors are locked, but that she can enter Grayson’s dreams if she is wearing his sweater. The first time Liv enters this dream world, despite finding herself in a cemetery created by Grayson’s unconscious, apparently witnessing a demonic ritual, she stays in the dream, due to her desire to learn what is going on. Liv Silver is not only very curious, she can also be extremely protective. One way this is instanced is through the way she treats her family. On the very first day of school, Liv cautions her to tell all the other students that “her big sister could do kung fu… just in case any of the students tried anything” (Gier 19). Even as Liv is struggling to get through her day, she is constantly looking for Mia in the hallways, unconsciously checking to see if her sister is doing all
