In the beginning of the book, Edna lets her husband sort of pusher her arounds and she is not allowed to be who she is. However, one night things changed. Her husband, Leonce, was going in the house to go to bed and he calls for Edna to join him. To his confusion she says no. This may be the first time Edna stood up for herself and did something she wanted to do.

Edna makes great gains in her personal freedom throughout the novel. There are a few symbols, like the sea and the tall grass meadow, that reinforce the theme of Edna’s personal freedom. To begin with, Edna discovers her desire for personal freedom as she approaches the sea during her stay in Grand Isle. In the first quote nobody is speaking, it is a narration, this is when Edna first discovered how to swim.
This emphasizes seriousness in the story. Examples include “Don’t banter me”, “This is more than folly”, PAGE 31 this describes Edna’s reaction to her overpowering husband's orders. The tone these specific words creates a restricting feeling in Edna’s life due to her relationship. This event is one of the first examples of Edna being physically independent from her husband, when she refuses to go inside to sleep and stay outside in the cold instead.
She gets extra jealous when he writes to Madame Lebrun, but not to her. Later, Edna returns back home to New Orleans as a whole new woman. She declares herself independent, and tries to forget Robert by seeking out Alcee
When Edna chooses to find herself as an individual, she sacrifices her social acceptance so that she can become a full fledged individual with opinions and aspirations of her own. When she comes back from the island, this new outlook on life clashes with her husband’s old world values, and he endeavors to stop what he sees as utter madness. At one point, a family doctor recommends to Léonce that Edna spend time at her ancestral home, far away from the water, to return her behavior to what he knows as normal. Edna expresses a dislike of and actively avoids certain parts of society, but cannot fully separate herself from the motherly duties forced onto her by traditional gender roles, unlike her muse Mademoiselle Reisz. These duties, ultimately, prove to be the fetters that cause Edna to sink downward, and lead her to end her life in the same ocean where it truly
