When I was 10 years old I looked up communism, and it meant ‘a society where property was public, and everyone would be helped according to needs.’ This confused me because I had always heard of communism in a negative context. Such a society would mean that, everyone would have food, water, shelter, an education and job. This is the ideal society. So why was it talked about with disgust and horror?
Have you ever wondered if there could possibly be a community where no one has any idea of normal everyday things? Well then the Giver is just one example. The Giver has a long history, and it all started with Lois Lowry’s dad and how he forgot his memory of any bad thing and Lois Lowry started thinking what a Community would be like without any painful memories and she came up with The Giver. The Giver revolves around a young boy named Jonas who was chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory which is the highest honor in his community. While Jonas is training he gets all of the memories that everyone else in the community has and then starts to think why can’t other people have these memories he then comes up with a plan to escape the community

He is named the new Receiver which is a very respected and high-end job in his community. This job also introduces him to a man that he calls the Giver.
Jimmi Hendrix said “anything not founded on truth will fall eventually; like a castle made of sand melts into the sea.” Throughout both past and modern societies, this quote has proved the truth can be hidden or its appearance seemingly changed, but ultimately what is truth and what is lies will be separated. In The Giver, Lois Lowry depicts a society that has been sheltered from all “bad” in the world and disguises murder, emotions and even death by renaming them, hiding them, and divulging only partial truths. In doing so, they only bury the concepts of truth and reality, placing their weight upon selected individuals. Has the community done wrong? In the book The Giver, a young boy lives in a very restrictive society that is different from the community people know today. He realizes there is more to the world than he is exposed to, and he fights against it. In the dystopian novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, the elders eliminate color, love, and personal freedom which provides both positive and negative impacts for the individuals and the community as a whole.
“Sameness” Chapter 11 in Lois Lowry’s book The Giver would be titled “sameness” because before the community there was varied climate. In the chapter Jonas receives three memories the first being of it snowing and hills. The second memory was of sunshine, and the third memory was being sunburned. Sameness is when the community was formed when the climate and other things went the same, so they made the climate the same because it was difficult to grow crops and hills were a nuisance to large vehicles.
In The Giver, there are people assigned as birth mothers. The children they provide, are nurtured to be given to selected family units made up from a designated mother and father that are not in love because they are chosen. This cycle happens over and over. The cycle creates the population of the community. People are so used to this because they are told that life is created like this is natural and better for the success of the community.
Literary Analysis: The Giver Imagine a world where everything seems perfect but truly it is not as pleasant as it appears. In The Giver by Lois Lowry shows us a community in the future with no feelings at all. Jonas a twelve year old boy knows his life as it is and one evening he learns the truth about the community. Jonas set’s off into a adventure to change it all. Character,conflict,and symbolism makes the reader see thru the eyes of a twelve year old in a place of slavery disguised without anyone knowing it.
Memories are one of the most important parts of life, there is no true happiness without the reminiscence of pain or love. This concept is portrayed in "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. The story tells of a 12-year old Jonas, who lives in a “utopian” society, where all bad memories are destroyed to avoid the feeling of pain. Jonas becomes the receiver, someone who receives good and bad memories, and he is transmitted memories of pain and pleasure from The Giver and is taught to keep the secret to himself. The author shows one should cherish memories, whether it be good or bad, as they are all of what is left of the past, and we should learn from it as to better ourselves in the future.
PL.1 Embedded Assessment 2.1 The Giver VS Modern Society How is the society of The Giver really that different from being a modern day society? When people try to create perfect societies, it creates mayhem! Our modern day society is far from a perfect society in the novel The Giver. While appearing perfect, Jonas’ society has many rules and laws under the surface that make it much more dangerous than modern day society.
The Giver was a story of a boy named Jonas who lived in a false reality similar to Truman’s. Everyone was detained inside an area for live, never having full control of their own lives, because of the same purpose. This purpose was to protect us from the dangers of the real world, and create a haven. Eventually, both Truman and Jonas escaped their haven and returned to the outside world in order to regain their freedom.
The movie “The Giver” sets place in a community that is very different than our own. The film is shown in black and white which represents the community and how they live their lives. At the head of the community is the elders who have come up with the rules for the community and choose the jobs assigned to the children. In charge of the elders is the chief elder who is like the president of the community; has the last say. One of the elders is very unique from all of the rest, he is the receiver.

He was even chastised when he exaggerated as a Four. He said that he was starving, but he was only hungry. His teachers made sure he understood that even though it was an unintentional lie, it was still a lie because as long as he lives in their community he will never be starving so they didn’t want him to ever say anything like that again.
One of the main themes in “The Giver” is the importance of individuality. The people in the community are not given any freedom to be individuals. They are not allowed to be different, and this creates less understanding of the world. This is why the community needs a receiver to understand these things for them.
The Perfect Place The society Lowry depicts in The Giver is a utopian society; a perfect world as envisioned by its creators. It has removed fear, pain, famine, illness, conflict, and hatred, all things that most of people would like to eliminate in today’s society. In this utopian community, major problems are rare, only minor problems such as scraping your knee would happen. Even when this would happen there would be medications sent to them.
