Nathaniel Hawthorne creates a tone of great triumph and disappointment in Baglioni’s last statement. Baglioni uses sarcasm at his last statement to Rappaccini to show that his most triumphant experiment wasn’t even anything to be proud of. Rappaccini did get what he wanted all along but not how he expected. Baglioni feels jubilant that he was able to ruin Rappaccini’s experiment and now that he’s dead, Baglioni doesn’t have any competition. Rappaccini had always been a better scientist than Baglioni and now that he is gone, Baglioni now takes the spot. With this triumph comes disappointment. In his last statement, Baglioni shows that Rappiccini didn’t do as great as what was expected of him and he could’ve done better. He is also let down
