Do you ever feel like you don’t have control over your life? In Nikki Giovanni’s poem “Choices” is mainly about learning how to make your own decisions in life. Yolanda Nikki Giovanni was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 7,1943. She graduated with honors from her grandfather’s alma mater Fisk University. This poem is all about knowing your worth as a human, and to do expect too much of life to be handed to you easily. Sometimes the little things that people have in life are way more valuable than the bigger things. In this paper, the following topics will be discussed, settling, being grateful, and expectations. The first topic is settling because people all over the world always settle for less sometimes and never really know that they do have to do that. Second topic is being grateful because even though some people may have those fancy houses and cars, there are some people on this earth who aren’t as blessed as they are. When people settle for something and they know that they’re worth more than that, then how are they supposed to know right from wrong? Humans make bad decisions all the time, but that’s how they learn from them. To really make it in life, people should never settle for less. In Nikki Giovanni’s case settling for less is not an option. The second topic is about being grateful. Giovanni acknowledges that she can’t have everything she wants in life, and that she needs to be thankful for the things that she has already. The finer things in life, are not always good for you. Giovanni says that “If I can’t have what I want… then my job is to want what I’ve got and be satisfied that at least there is something more to want.” That quote above means that, yes Giovanni does realize that there are better things that she has in life but that does not mean that those particular things will make her life any better than it already
