Loneliness feeling like you're isolated and no longer feeling like you can achieve your hopes or dreams in your quotient life. Steinback demonstrates the theme of loneliness quite well in his novel of mice and men. To represent the theme of loneliness, I have chosen the following theme statement “Loneliness leads to desperate actions and putting yourself in situations you would never be expected in order to try and relive the feeling of isolation.” Steinback uses characters such as George, Curly’s wife, Curly and Crooks to illuminate this theme. In fact, the town, which the characters’ live, in is called ‘Soledad’, which actually translates to solitude and isolation. One of the central characters the novel focuses in on is George. After attempting to fight Lennie in a particular petty moment and thinking he had the upper hand, Lennie manages to allow the men to perceive him as a coward, which creates an increased feeling of alienation and distance between Curly and the other men on the ranch. His wife also ridiculing him, after, she found out about the incident. Curly’s fear of loneliness and isolation and lead him to take desperate actions such fighting Lennie in order to feel superior but instead results in him making a fool of himself. The final character I have chosen to represent the theme of loneliness from this novel is Crooks. Crooks faces racism which results in him being isolated from the others on the ranch and a deep mistrust others. He is forced to live under different circumstances than the other men such as having his own room in the barn, which actually physically separates him from the other men. Also because his back has grown crooked, Crooks is limited when it comes to social work or work contract with the other men which leaves him with only being able to tend the
