Childhood is supposed to be the time in a person’s life when they are carefree and raised to know the comfort of love. Imagine being a child who is stressed about how not to make any mistakes because it could cause a nightmare to unfold at the hands of those who are supposed to love you. Do you think you could have experienced the later childhood and not have any long term effects such as drug abuse, prostitution, immoral impulses, or emotional distress? There are clear correlations between childhood abuse and these things appearing throughout an adult’s life.
The abuse one experiences as a child has both immediate and long term physical effects. The immediate physical effects can range from something as simple as bruising, but can also extend to broken bones, and even more seriously brain contusions, etc. The immediate physical effects are typically easy to spot and see the correlation; now the same is not said for the long term effects. Long term effects are not hard to spot but sometimes are a bit harder to see the correlation between them and the childhood abuse that occurred years before. The immediate effects of child abuse “can cause victims to feel isolation, fear, and distrust” (Long-Term Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect, 2019). Some of the long term psychological effects of child abuse are listed by the ChildWelfare Information Gateway as having PTSD, attention deficit disorders, attachment difficulties, difficulties regulating emotions, and antisocial tendencies. All of these issues are not as easily seen by an untrained eye but are just as impactful on a person’s life if not more than the physical attributes that come with abuse.
