GMO Labeling
Most of the food society consumes will be expected to contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients. Shoppers could think what they’re eating is healthy for them, but they don’t know what’s inside. Many people are agreeing that GMOs should be labeled because GMOs are becoming a problem to the environment and human health. Before you eat a meal or snack, do you ever actually think about where it comes from, what is in it, and how it will affect your body? Most people these days consider eating to be a mindless act, especially when they are so busy with school, work, and other things. U.S. manufacturers use more genetically modified foods than any other country (Streker, 2016). The concerns of the use of GMOs involve unknown long-term health effects and unknown long-term environmental effects. There should be a law requiring manufacturers to label foods containing GMOs. Big food companies have made substantial efforts to promote its claimed benefits, such as “greater agricultural efficiency and cheaper, more nutritious, novel foodstuffs” (“Genetically Modified Foods”). “They argue GM foods increase food security for future generations and benefit the environment because they conserve soil, water, and energy” (Streker). That is nonsense due to the fact most hunger is due to economic inequality and systemic corruption that stops food from getting to where it's needed, not due to food shortages (“Why to Support”). Big food companies place GMOs in many products that consumers are not aware of because there are no labels. It's time for that to change. A mandatory labeling procedure would better inform buyers about the nature of food products and allow consumers to choose to have direct or indirect experience with GM
