Imagine if you were in the desert and had no food, water, threadbare clothes, and a war is right in front of you. Salva, the main character in Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water is able to survive and overcome a variety of challenges through his hard work, relationships, and perseverance. A Long Walk to Water is about an 11-year old boy who is walking away from the war. He had to leave because of a gun fire that goes off while he is at school. Now he has to travel the desert. These next 3 paragraphs are about the traits that Salva has used to survive the desert. First, Salva’s hard work saved his life in the desert. In the story Salva grows closer to an older woman ‘Auntie’ and works to not burden her. ‘Salva stayed in the woman’s barn again that night...water from the pond.’ (17-18). Salva ran into the bush to escape the gunfire. ‘He ran until he could not run anymore. Then he walked. For hours, until the sun was nearly gone from the sky.’(9). This means that although Salva is afraid, he still makes a decision to save his own life. He joins another group of Dinka refugees to continue his journey. ‘Then he caught up with the group, determined not to lag behind, not to complain, not to be trouble to anyone.’ (22). This shows that Salva is focused on his own survival and will do whatever it takes to make it to safety. Salva swims across the Gilo river. ‘Salva had no choice.
