Wilson Zhu 7th Grade Fox Salva’s Survival: What factors made survival possible for Salva in A Long Walk to Water Could you survive a week with a scarce amount of water? In the story A Long Walk to Water Salva has to rely on very dirty water. The book A Long Walk to Water was created by Linda Sue Park about Salva Dut and his survival in the South Sudanese Second Civil War. Salva survived in the South Sudanese Civil War against the North and South. Many did not survive, but Salva did. He survived because of his uncle, his teacher also with his so called auntie, and his own knowledge, patience and persistence. Salva’s uncle helped Salva survive with advice and assistance. Salva’s uncle helped him walk the desert and gave him advice. He also helped with Salva’s emotional breakdowns. His uncle says, “So I am going to shoot a fine meal as soon as we come across anything worth to eat.”(35) He will survive with Salva and not let him starve or die. After he had seen his sick father, he decided to drill wells for water in Southern Sudan. Salva has helped people to survive because of his idea of building the wells. His story is very educational because of what he did to survive. He has inspired a lot of people to overcome things and to be mindful of other people. If he had not had help from people around him like his uncle, teacher and his so called auntie, he would have died. Also, if he had not been a patient and persistent little boy, he might not have made it. The lesson that Salve gained from his experience was not to be selfish. I learned to not be selfish because Salva had taught us not to be it and to help others. I was shocked that a kid my age had to go through these experiences. I have little to no experience of what he had to do to survive
