In Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston shares her experience of being forcibly relocated to an internment camp during World War II as a result of Executive Order 9066 and the Alien Enemies Act. In the first 10 chapters of the book, Jeanne describes the fear and confusion that she and her family felt as they were forced to leave their home and belongings behind. One quote from the book that relates to the Alien Enemies Act comes from the first chapter, where Jeanne describes her father's reaction to the news of the Pearl Harbor attack: "I watched Papa's face turn dark with fear, and then with anger. On page 36 the book reads, “Lying on his back he often choked on food, everyone ignored him blaming it on his spastic nature.”

She competes with herself to accept not only her ethnic background, but also her social status within society. The conflicts transformed Josie’s attitude and personality, from Josie wanting to completely block out her culture to learning that she should be more self-acceptant as well as working on her relationships with her family and friends by the end of the film. Looking For Alibrandi introduces the protagonist through Tomato Day, an annual celebration in which Josie’s Italian family takes part in. Josie is utterly embarrassed that her family participate in this annually and consequently describes it as “national wog day”.

Josie is a typical teenage girl who is arrogant and challenging with those who pressure her.

Josie and Micheal’s relationship improves in a positive way because they begin as strangers and slowly their Father and Daughter relationship strengthens. During the course of the novel, Josie becomes close to a boy her age named John Barton from a completely different world to her and discovers that nothing is black and white. At the beginning of this novel, Josie describes Nonna Katia as annoying. However, as the story progresses she begins to feel sympathy and empathy for her.

Knowing the culture of other people can help us to understand their values, beliefs, attitude and behavior. Behaviors and attitude are changeable, values and beliefs aren’t. Culture has built those values and beliefs in us.

While the definition of culture has changed dramatically since the 16th century the ideals of social expectations as well as the influence of war have not as today many people still are influenced by these cultural definitions.
