As the fifth chapter begins, it is visible that the boys are starting to lose a sense of organization. This is shown when in the chapter Ralph gets frustrated that the boys are not following the rules set on the second chapter. He brings up the importance of the signal fire, and how they should take care of it more. As if they had before the ship from the previous chapter would have saved them already. Near the end of the chapter Ralph doubts his qualifications of being the chief.

The boys had decided to have a conch to represent who will be voiced. Piggy has the conch in his hands, and attempts to speak. He had constantly repeated that he had the conch. It had reached the point where he was filled with frustration and anger. However, Jack denies the rule of the conch on the mountain and forcefully tells Piggy to shut up.

Piggy is a unique character because he thinks and acts like a grown-up. In the beginning of the novel, Piggy and Ralph discovered a conch and Piggy proposed that Ralph uses the conch to “call the others on the island to have a meeting.” Piggy relies on the conch to be heard from the others and believes that the social convention will have an outcome. But whenever the group of boys isn’t listening to him in an assembly, he gets annoyed that no one listens to his ideas and starts giving them a tirade.
There is no exact time for how long the boys have been on the island, but Golding provides hints that express how long the boys have been there. In the first scene of the chapter, Golding reveals the extended length of time spent on the island through Jacks’ hunt. As Jack crouches in the jungle, his senses notice “the faintest indication of a trail here; a cracked twig and what might be the impression of one side of a hoof” (Golding 48). Jacks senses are honed enough that he can detect the tiniest possible print of only half of a hoof. He is so in tune with the island that he can recognize something only an experienced hunter could detect.
Lord of The Flies The book Lord of The Flies by William Golding is about a group of British schoolboys who landed on a deserted island without any adult; after their plane crash, they will need to survive on their own until someone comes to save from the island. In Lord of the Flies, Piggy, one of the schoolboys on the island, wants order and peace with everyone. Piggy is considerate/ helpful to other, faithful to all rules/ laws, but inactive in activities. Piggy is considerate to others and helpful in the story by helping others in need. He shows this when one little boy asks for the conch and the people just laugh at the little boy but Piggy help by saying, “‘Let him have the conch!’
He told the others that there is no adults on this island and had to take care of things by themselves. Also Ralph declared that at meetings, the person who blew the conch had the right to speak and the others had to listen. Piggy took the conch and talked about how they are stuck on the island. Then a small boy said that he saw a “beastie” in the woods at the night. Because of that everyone got scared and frightened.
Ralph becomes frustrated because they boys don't listen to what he says anymore and he finally says “ hasn't anyone got any sense?”(102). Ralph has lost all control in almost everyone because they follow Jack and ignore what they need to do to stay civilized. While Ralph's power is fading Jacks is growing stronger. Jack takes some boys the the other side of the island. When Ralph comes to talk to Jack he brings the conch and Jack says “the conch doesn't count on this side of the island”(150).
(Golding 169). After this quote, the conch is blown and they decide to confront Jack. Piggy plans to ask Jack to give back his glasses because “what’s right’s right” (Golding 171). Ralph and Samneric carry spears, but Piggy insists on only holding the conch.
