The chapter begins with, "the fair boy" making his way out of a jungle and toward a lagoon. A red and yellow bird flashes upward just as another person, known as "the fat boy" who is wearing "thick spectacles”, follows behind. The two boys meet and discuss the fact that their plane has crashed. They both reach the conclusion that there are no grown-ups on the island. Neither of them can't seem to find the plane or the pilot. The fair boy presumes that both must have been dragged out to sea by a storm. He makes the dire statement that, "There must have been some kids still in it," (“it” being the plane that went out to sea). Ralph and the fat boy assume that others have survived and are maybe hiding in the copious foliage. The shore of the island is described in grave detail- composed of: palm trees, coarse grass, and decaying coconuts. This is in direct contrast to, "the darkness of the forest." …show more content…

Piggy, however, says the pilot told them (before the crash) that an atomic bomb had gone off and everyone else was dead. This suggests that perhaps the boys were being evacuated, maybe even from some kind of war zone, when the plane crashed. Using a conch shell, Ralph creates a noise that attracts other survivors from the woodworks of the island. Their ages vary from six to twelve.
