Lord of the Flies is a book about a group of children that get stuck on an island and have to come up with a way to survive. It eventually turns into the children getting in two groups. One of the themes in this book is civilization vs. savage. The two leaders of the groups, Ralph and Jack, are examples of civilization vs. savage. It is important that this theme is in the book because it shows how one person’s thoughts can be contradictory with another's and that people will change over time. The first person that is involved in this theme is Ralph. Ralph was elected chief in the beginning of the book. It is very important to the book’s plot and meaning. It is important because it shows that the two sides on the island weren’t only Ralph and Jack, but civilized and savagery. Towards the beginning of the book almost everyone was civilized, trying to think of how to get home, and scared being on the island. As the story went on, more and more children started to go to the other side. They started becoming savages and starting to go lose their minds. They got comfortable with being on the island and forgot what their home had been like and who their families were. (Chap.5) The theme represents how easily people can change and not in a good way. In the end of the book they do get saved by a captain and his ship. It is caused though by Jack lighting the forest on fire. This is ironic because it is in favor of both sides of this theme. It is savagery, on Jack’s side, by burning the forest to get Ralph, but it is civilized, on Ralph’s side, by it is a signal to a passing by ship. It is important that this theme is in the book because it shows how one person’s thoughts can be contradictory with another's and that people will change over
