The key attribute that separates one from being good rather than evil is their compassion for others. In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, this can be observed through the actions of Ralph and Jack; Ralph, demonstrating empathy and compassion while Jack is carrying out acts of brutality and savagery. Towards the beginning of the novel, Jack makes fun of Piggy and then proceeds to break one of his lenses. “Ralph felt his lips twitch; he was angry with himself for giving way. He muttered. ‘That was a dirty trick.’” (72). Even in the beginning, Ralph demonstrates compassion, while Jack harasses and inflicts fear upon others.
