Dehumanization is the process of destroying someone's human qualities. Lord of The Flies is a fictional book about a group of English boys whose plane crashed on an Island during the third World War. In the book there are no adults on the Island only the boys and they end up as savages. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fictional book about a man named Dorian Gray. In the book he is corrupted by a man named Lord Henry and his hedonistic ways. In both books dehumanization is a central part of the plot in both books. In both Lord of the Flies and The Picture of Dorian Gray there are many forms of Dehumanization. For example in Lord of the Flies the boys on the island treat piggy like they are better than he is. One of the ways the boys dehumanize Piggy is when they don't let him speak at the meetings. An example is when Ralph, Simon, Jack, Roger and the Hunters go hunting and the stick Piggy back on the beach taking care of the littluns. The boys do that because they don't think that Piggy is capable of hunting on account of his Asthma. Even though Piggy's Asthma is pretty bad they still should have asked him if he wanted to go with the hunting. This kind of dehumanization is also shown in The Picture of Dorian Gray. In The Picture of Dorian Gray Basil and Lord Henry treat Dorian like he is a little puppy. For example in one the scenes in The Picture of Dorian Gray Basil says to Dorian “Just turn your head a little more to the right, Dorian, like a good boy”. It is not ok to treat someone like a dog. As humans we have the rights to be talked to like humans and not be belittled and talked down to like a dog. As you can see the theme of being belittled is very common in both Lord of The Flies and The Picture of Dorian
