Democracy VS. Dictatorship
Democracy can be defined as a government based on the belief that power should be held by either elected representatives or by the people themselves, however, a dictatorship is specified as a government where there is only one person or a small group who holds the power to make all the necessary decisions. William Golding utilises two boys, Jack and Ralph, to show both of these forms of government in The Lord Of The Flies to document the difference in the effect they both have on the other children. Tyranny, from the looks of it, seems far more effective to lead than democracy. A dictatorship is more effective because there is more control over the people, it tends to reach the initial goals and gets things done

Everyone in the tribe saw Wilfred and knew what had happened so they were most likely to not follow in the littluns footsteps by making Jack or Roger irated. Ralph’s group, on the other hand, most definitely deteriorated into some sort of orderless monstrosity, probably because of his lack of consequences. Additionally, people tend to listen to Jack, he is very opinionated and knows how to get everyone to listen to him, but in contrast to that, Ralph’s form of leadership got out of hand very quickly and people stopped listening to him. This is shown perfectly at the end of chapter six when everyone does not listen to Ralph to go back to camp, but then went on to follow Jack towards his the rock. “ ‘I’m chief. We’ve got to make this certain. Can’t you see the mountain? There’s no signal showing. There may be a ship out there. Are you all off your rockers?’ Mutinously, the boys fell silent or muttering. On the contrary, Jack and his ‘iron fist’ way of ruling, does happen to be successful when completing tasks. Firstly, when Ralph needed help building huts, something everyone in the group should be helping with, only Simon out of all of the children on the island aided him with this, later resulting in him calling a meeting and getting mad at everybody “ ‘And I work all day with nothing but Simon and you come back and don’t even notice the huts!’ “ (Golding 55) this was when he went off on the group for only thinking about meat when he thought shelter was more of a priority to them. Jack’s tribe, however, had no difficulty in providing this shelter, the castle rock. Another thing Ralph seemed to have trouble providing for his group was meat. Only Jack was fixated on getting meat for everyone, and there was a high demand for it as well “ ‘We want meat.’ ‘Well, we haven’t got any yet. And we want shelters.’ “ (Golding 51) which shows the difference in priorities between Ralph and Jack. Although eventually Jack had both. Once he started his own tribe, the castle rock tribe always seemed to have meat. In addition to that, Jack’s group had security, from the opposing tribe and from the beast “ ‘Some of you will stay here to improve the cave and defend the gate. I shall take a few hunters with me and bring back meat. The defenders of the gate will see that the others
