Task 3 In the Lord of The Flies by William Golding, William Golding believes man is inherently corrupt; therefore, law and authority is utmost important for mandkind. William Golding is going for a more savage look in the novel for example the plane that the children are on crashes and it kills the pilot. The children end up waking up from the crash and are stranded on an island. These sources “What Makes Us Moral” and the article “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” agree with William Golding’s Lord of The Flies.
A famous Chinese proverb states, “One dog barks at something and a hundred bark at the bark”. This use of animal imagery to explain the issues with human behavior can also be seen in Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The novel, told through the eyes of schizophrenic chronic Chief Bromden, revolves around R. P. McMurphy helping the patients overcome their fear of Nurse Ratched and her power and control over the ward. Throughout the book, Kesey uses animal imagery to depict the personalities and behaviors of Nurse Ratched, McMurphy, and the patients. Nurse Ratched is a wolf, and she thrives off of her overbearing control over the patients in the ward and enjoys having everything conform to her set of rules.
Usually, when the term “beast” is mentioned, negative connotations are developed. In Lord of the Flies, the meaning of the entire story is determined by the symbolic definition of the “beast”. Lord of the Flies surrounds a group of boys stranded on an island. The presumed idea of a beast materialized and spread amongst the group.

All things are capable of change in our world, and the symbolism of fire in Lord of the Flies is no different. In the book a group of boys land on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. They try to build a society built on the ideas of the adult society they came from. At first the boys seemed to be structured and ordered, but soon their primal instincts of savagery came out changing their system into a horrifying nightmare. Throughout Lord of the Flies, the strength and purpose of the fire created by the boys seems to be a meter of the boys connection to civilization, where towards the beginning it is strong and valiant, and then slowly loses its importance and burns out and finally it encircles the whole island due to its savage purposes
William Golding uses many symbols in his novel The Lord of the Flies to create interaction between his characters. Golding’s characters are stranded on an island and one of their first decisions is to build a fire that will be used for creating a smoke signal for passing ships. Golding uses fire to symbolize three things in The Lord of The Flies: hope, struggle, and destruction. To begin with, Golding’s representation of fire as a necessity of hope to being rescued is an aspect that is easily conceivable to the reader, and this is purely demonstrated in the dialogue between several of his characters. During the first meeting the boys decide that they must have a fire in order to signal to passing ships that someone is on the island.
In the beginning of the book fire is solely being thought about as hope for a ship to arrive so they can return back to civilization. This point is supported when jack says, “There’s another thing. We can help them find us” (38). The narrator tell us the important of the fire when he says, “Life became
At first the fire was used as a signal in order to try and save the boys, making it a tool for success to return them to the normal world. Ralph proclaims “We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us.” (Golding). Furthermore, in the novel, the fire becomes a source of comfort for the boys, providing them with warmth and usefulness as a source of light and method to cook food.
Children are often portrayed as pure and undefiled. Some people would even attempt to shield the children from the inevitable path of adulthood. Living on an isolated island can certainly be life changing. For the boys in Lord of the Flies, they were ultimately forced to quickly adapt and learn how adult life really works resulting in the corruption of this group.
The sense that is tendered from fire is of cooking and, accordingly Jack makes use of fire for the cooking or roasting of hunted pigs. But more significantly fire becomes a symbol of rescue. Ralph suggested that fire should be lightened at all times on top so that it might attract attention of the sailors of a passing ship. Therefore he seemed disgusted if the fire was put down due to the negligence of jack and his fellowmen who seemed more inclined towards hunting than letting the fire lightened up. Ralph repeatedly urges the boys not to forget to feed the fire and to keep it burning all the time.
In Lord of the Flies, the boys used the fire for cooking raw meat, that raw meat gave them more energy to being able to survive, and at the end, a fire is what eventually saved them, if it wasn’t for a fire, Ralph would of died, and the boys on the island would of probably died of one by one.
Thesis Statement: In Lord of the Flies William Golding throughout the book is trying to show you that society should recognize man is evil. Introduction Paragraph: In the book Lord of the Flies the author William Golding shows a group of boys losing their innocence throughout their life stuck on this inhabited island in the pacific ocean. These boys go from being quiet and shy to violent and dangerous young little boys. Golding uses the pigs, hunting, and the boys face painting to show their lose of innocence throughout the story. There 's no rules of any sort on this island these boys landed on they are free to do whatever they want whenever they want.
The fire was also a symbol of civilization, that the boys would survive and get rescued. Fire is quite profound in what it reveals about humans. The fire was the object that the hunters didn’t have, it was desirable because it was limited. The fire brought out the innate greed that humans possess. The hunters weren’t content with asking for fire from Ralph, they were too prideful and savage to be civil in any manner, so they stole it.

Manipulation to create power One powerful tool to gain power over an induvidual is minipulation. In goldings novel lord of the flies many characters are minipulated and power changes hand through many characters. The key character that creates power through manipulation is jack. The three ways he uses this manipulation is by violance , food and fear. One of the most powerful forms of manipulation that jack uses in the novel is fear.
