As we can see from Lord of the Flies by William Golding, we can infer that it is hard to maintain individuality whilst among a group of people.The only way one can keep their individuality while in a group is if they have self-esteem. Having self-esteem and voicing an opinion is one way to keep individuality. The boys forgot about their character and personality because fear and savagery took over. Their will to hunt blinded them from what was actually happen which was them losing their individuality. One can't stay themselves without self-esteem. One must express their opinions and viewpoints. Ralph’s group remained civilized and let others speak(when they were holding the conch) rather than Jack’s group. “Then Simon stood up and took the conch from Piggy, who was so astonished that he remained on his feet. Ralph looked up at Simon. “Simon? What is it this time?”(128). Nobody thinks alike; everyone is different. Just like how George S. Mob mentality is how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors. Jack constantly makes his tribe members fall into mob mentality. They all are afraid of the same thing and want the same thing, so this makes it easier on Jack to manipulate their “emotions” into what he wants which is taking away their individuality. The boys kill Simon due to mob mentality which all started because of Jack.“Jack leapt onto the sand. “Do our dance! Come on! Dance”.....Now out of the terror rose another desire, thick, urgent, blind”(151-152). The boys follow Jack blindly and obediently to fit in. “He turned and trotted away and after a moment they followed him obediently”(133).
