What is a microcosm? A microcosm is the representation of humankind that is encapsulated in miniature. Lord Of The Flies is a novel written by William Golding and the plot is set in a fictional atomic war during the 1950s in the Pacific Ocean. It is about a group of boys aged 7-12 that are stranded on an uninhabited island, how they survive on the island before they get rescued and how they face the problems that come simultaneously. The three main characters are Ralph, Piggy, and Jack. William Golding has created a microcosm of the different human characteristics by using these characters that are stranded on the island and every one of them is given a specific trait that reflects the main theme which is the importance of civilization. Golding decided to create a microcosm so that he could shows his key message but also how the world would be without it. Each of these main characters epitomizes a human trait that is introduced in this world, for example, Ralph represents democracy and order , Piggy delineates intelligence and science, and Jack portrays wildness, violence, and savagery Ralph is the protagonist of the novel, Golding’s goal is to manifest democracy and order through Ralph.
