Out of all of the characters on the island, I believe that Ralph is the most able leader. This because Ralph is a rational thinker, as he looks at the bigger picture and sees what needs to be done. Also, Ralph is trying to establish order by forming rules and enforcing them. Lastly, out of Simon, Piggy and Jack, Ralph is the best overall leader as he is optimistic. He also looks to the brighter side, thinking that they will eventually be rescued and that they will live in harmony until then. To start off, Ralph is a calm and mindful person, as he tries to enforce equality among the boys (through rules). As soon as he gets everyone on the island together, his top priority was to get everyone in order. Also every person on the island has to go by the same rules, and everyone has their own jobs depending on their ages. For example, he made the rule that you can only talk in a meeting if you have the conch shell. Him establishing the rules is shown through Ralph saying, “There aren’t any grown-ups. We shall have to look after ourselves.”, and, “We’ll have to have ‘Hands up’ like at school.’. Additionally, like stated previously, all the same rules apply to everyone. He tries to be as fair as possible and he does not take advantage of the respect that he has garnered. To build off of the previous point, Ralph has respect. He is respected by everyone on the island not only because of his looks, but because of the way he thinks. He does everything for the best interest of the people. He instructed them to build a fire so that they could be noticed by ships, he led the building of the shelters so that the boys can be safe at night and he makes sure that everyone has a place to eat, sleep, bathe and go to the washroom.
