Family, Hope, and Dreams Lorraine Hansberry author of a drama A Raisin In The Sun. This drama is about a poor African-American family living on the south side of Chicago. With issues that range from generational clashes to the civil rights and human movement. The Younger’s have an opportunity to escape from poverty which comes in the form of a $10,000 life insurance check that Lena Younger (mama) receives on the behave of her husband's death. Lorraine Hansberry uses symbolism to help the readers understand tremendously. Lorraine uses window, light, and plant as symbols of mama’s (Lena Youngers) family, hope,and dreams.
To start off, Mama is the most caring and sensitive character in A Raisin in The Sun. Mama is the mother of Walter and Beneatha. The mother-In Law of Ruth, who is Walter’s wife. And the grandmother of Travis Walter’s son. Mama has a plant that represents her dream for her family. The care mama gives her plant is familiar with her care for her children and grandson.
