Lorraine Vivian Hansberry was an African American author born on May 19th, 1930, on the South Side of Chicago. She was born into a financially stable African American family because her father founded one of the first African American banks in Chicago and owned a real estate business. She was the first African American woman to produce a play on Broadway. Even though she had a great family and became a very successful person when she was a child she still dealt with segregation. When she was 8 years old, Lorraine and her family knowingly tried to move into a restricted neighborhood. The character who sought out an improved living situation for the family the most: was Mama. Mama had always dreamed of buying a house and she presents this to her daughter-in-law, Ruth. She states, “But Lord, child, you should know all the dreams I had ‘bout buying that house and fixing it up…” (Hansberry 45). This explains that all Mama wanted was something simple to help the entire family. All she had ever wanted was to continue her late husband’s legacy and keep the dream alive of buying a house. Everyone in the family knew that their home was not in the best condition & how they were living was likewise not the best. So Mama decided to improve that by deciding to going out and buy a house. Mama speaks to Travis while the rest of the family listens. She states, “... —you know that money we got in the mail this morning?...Well — what you think your grandmama gone and done with that money?... She went out and she bought you a house!” (Hansberry 90-91). This was perfect because Mama had finally used the money for her dream and helped out the entire family. In A Raisin in the Sun, a play by Lorraine Hansberry, money is displayed to solve all the problems of the family, such as improving the family’s lives, to help the family achieve their passions, and to give them family and financial stability.
