One of the most recent scandal that happened in Law Enforcement community is the Los Angeles jail scandal. Los Angeles County Sheriff are involved in the incident that took place in Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles, CA. Based on the reports, the sheriffs were abusing the inmates and also in one occasion has been reported illegally detaining the visitors of the prison from Australia. The beatings were unjustified and causes a stir in the Law Enforcement community. This is just another case of police brutality that as been put into light and its giving our police officers a bad name. Back in 1971 there was a prison experiment that took place in Stanford University and it explains clearly why these cases happen in the prison and jail environment. Philip Zimbardo, a psychologist did this study to show what kind of behavior happens when they people are given authority and it also shows how they use their power affecting the situation they are put into. In this research paper we are going to visit the case of Los Angeles Men’s central jail and find out what went wrong. We will also take a look into what happened in Abu Gharib prison and see if this is an ongoing trend in the correction facilities. We will then look back on the Stanford Prison study conducted by the psychologist Philip Zimbardo in 1971 to see if this experiment truly proves that behavior does change resulting in the abuse of the inmates by the officers. In this research study we are going to see the similarities of the two cases and find out if the Stanford Prison experiment is relatively true about the outcome of the study. Numerous videos and pictures floods the social media world like Facebook and Twitter everyday showing police officers abusing their power. This is not something new anymore and this is an ongoing problem that our Criminal Justice system in the United States has to focus on. The major scandal that happened in Los Angeles Men’s Central jail that involves 18 Los Angeles County Sheriff officers changed how the public looks at the police officers when they are inside of jail using their power and no one is looking. Integrity is one of the qualities that can be found in the police officers. If one officer have this quality it will prevent them doing abuse, misconduct or corruption. In this case the police integrity is questioned inside the walls of Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, CA. The ones that does the misconduct are often referred to as the bad apples. The scandal does not only involved one but 18 police officials, this must have start from one police officer doing a little misconduct and continues to spread that caused them to get involved in one of the biggest scandal that happened in Criminal Justice history in United States.
