Regehr Mr. Sharp Humanities 10 7/November/2022 Comparing The Use Of Multiple Narrators In Three Day Road And The Fifth Wave “We all fight on two fronts, the one facing the enemy, the one facing what we do to the enemy” (Boyden 328). The novels Three Day Road and The Fifth Wave both utilize the narrative technique of multiple narrators. The novel The Fifth Wave is about a zombie apocalypse in the United States in modern society.
When we look at the grandmother in the story, we see many traits of which cause problems and precarious situations. The grandmother when looked at closely is the main reason that all the problems in the story happened. In the beginning of the story she displays a stubborn attitude and shows a spirit of independency; maybe too much. She carefully sneaks her cat into the car, and later down the road the cat sneaks out, jumps on the drivers face, and causes them to have a wreck. As seen in the article “A Good Man is Hard To Find” it states “The grandmother never turns her critical eye on herself to inspect her own hypocrisy, dishonesty, and selfishness.
Rick Yancey conveys multiple themes through The 5th Wave, including of which is “Survival depends on being dedicated to others, not one’s self.” Two other themes are “Love can drive people beyond their limits” along with “To win a war you must know how your enemy thinks.” These three central elements had been clearly expressed throughout the book and became very prominent messages by my completion of The 5th Wave. “Survival depends on being dedicated to others, not one’s self” has a different meaning to different people, including some of the characters in the book. To me, I took it as the people you love and your family can lead you to have a reason to live and a strong will to survive.
Caring, courage, and selflessness are three strong traits that demonstrate ones willingness and strength to make the great sacrifice of putting others before oneself. There are few people that carry these traits, so when one openly displays them, it allows others to view just how much courage they do have. Khaled Hosseini, the author of A Thousand Splendid Suns, excellently demonstrates through two young women, what it is like to face tough situations in order to keep their loved ones from harm’s way. Putting others before oneself can be a difficult sacrifice, but it builds strength of character. Mariam and Laila demonstrate such selflessness, as well as courage, and caring.

Love is a destroying force for many. The novel “Earthbound” by Aprilynne Pike portrays many different aspects of love, fate and power. Tavia Michaels is mysteriously a sole survivor of a plane crash that kills her parents. Fortunately, Tavia quickly finds herself a best friend that she later falls in love with;Benson, which helps her deal with her mental instability in the beginning of the novel. Still completely lost and sorrowful, she begins to see visions of a mystical boy that she has never spoken to before and starts to have strange feelings of attachment towards him.
“This Fleeting World” is a summarized version of world history in a short, 92 page book. How can such a small book tell such a large story? Well this book is divided into 3 sections, “The era of foragers”, “The agrarian era”, and “The modern era”. The first era is the era of foragers you may know as the hunter-gatherer era lasted between 300,000 BCE to 10,000 BCE according to this book and was by far the longest era in human history. The second era is the agrarian era which lasted between 13000 BCE and 1750 CE and was the 2nd longest era in human history.

The grandmother grew in that moment of death more than she ever did in the little parts that we read about her life, and she dies in peace. Her actions may have even changed the Misfit too. At the end, he says “she would have been a good woman if he 'd been there all her life to shoot her.” (366). This line confused me the first time reading it, but the second time around it made more sense.
