Rick Yancey conveys multiple themes through The 5th Wave, including of which is “Survival depends on being dedicated to others, not one’s self.” Two other themes are “Love can drive people beyond their limits” along with “To win a war you must know how your enemy thinks.” These three central elements had been clearly expressed throughout the book and became very prominent messages by my completion of The 5th Wave. “Survival depends on being dedicated to others, not one’s self” has a different meaning to different people, including some of the characters in the book. To me, I took it as the people you love and your family can lead you to have a reason to live and a strong will to survive. Cassie’s interpretation was that she had to stay alive so she could find Sammy and keep the promise that she made Sammy before he is taken away on the bus. Ben finds his courage and need to survive from his little sister's death, he let her die so he will not go out without a strong fight and some redemption for letting his family down. …show more content…
Ben has a connection, also, since his love for his sister keeps him going through war and even when he doesn't think he can push himself harder, he does. I believe the meaning is that when you have to do difficult things in your life, having people you love and care for in mind help you complete your goals while your body is holding you back. Evan is head over heals for Cassie which tempts him to penetrate the camp while Cassie is looking for her brother. He decides to start taking out sentries and ultimately ends up getting himself inside the camp and saves Cassie because he cannot live without her. He also volunteers to stay behind, while Ben, Sammy and Cassie get out of the camp, and blows up the
