The ignorant people in the society do not seek anything meaningful in their lives, which results in emptiness within their heart. Suppression of truth or knowledge makes life empty and when life is hollow and empty there is no point in living.
It is also said that having an understanding of race and slavery, does not stop racial oppression.
I didn't want to be white. My siblings had already instilled the notion of black pride in me. I would have preferred that Mommy were black. Now, as a grown man, I feel privileged to have come from two worlds.”
The trouble around diversity Johnson states within chapter one of his book that people differ from one another. The trouble is produced by a world organized in ways that encourage people to use difference to include or exclude, reward or punish, credit or discredit, elevate or oppress, value or devalue, leave alone or harass. Privilege exists when one group has something of value that is denied to others simply because of the groups they belong to, rather than because of anything they've done or failed to do"(Johnson, 21). Privilege can also refer to unearned advantages.
The lack there of can Intel that oppression could have won and resulted to failure. Both Frederick Douglas and Malcolm X, more than one hundred years apart, have been strivers to fight for the ongoing battle for social equality for the United States. It has always given us wishes which men may not wish. We know that we are evil, but there is no will to increase us and no power to resist it. This is our wonder and our secret fear, that we know and do not resist.” (Paragraph 7) which creates the understanding that Equality is an intellectual outcast
My family struggled through an era typified socio-economic distress. Like so many others, I happen to come from a family of limited financial means. I am the second person in my family to earn a high school diploma, and the first to attend college. I refused to allow the imposition of stereotypical attitudes to confine my identity, my family or our potential. I was raised by my mother and stepfather.
The idea that life is all sunshine and flowers is quickly diminished by the true horrors that await us in our lifetime. Myop’s life up until this point has been an endless summer filled with flower picking while a song plays in her head. Her summer ends abruptly when she makes and unsightly discovery in the woods behind the house. Her discovery essentially ends her summer and her ignorance of what the world really has to offer her.
That [she’d] never seed no real meaning in birds going south till Harker pointed it out to me” (207). She consequently says, “this is what I hold against slavery. May a time come when I forgive, cause I don’t think I’m set up to forget--the beatings, the selling, the killings, but I don’t think I ever forgive the ignorance they kept us in” (208). Knowledge is a basic human right and keeping black people uneducated suggests that white people consider slaves to be less than human. The lack of knowledge about the world further ensured that black people will never try to overpower their
The unfortunate truth is that discrimination still exists in our politics/society/day
If you really want to hear a story, first thing you should know is that this story has a happy ending, well at least for me it does because it shows what happens when you act like a moronic phony. I imagine this happening to a lot of people I know. I don’t know when or even where this story takes place, if you want to know the truth, but I know it’s far away from here. So anyways, somewhere in a god forsaken place, was this dull little village. The villagers would wake up before dawn and hear old sheep until the sun would rise.
Ignorance is bliss. Often people hide behind what they wish to believe. The truth demands discomfort and people prefer comfort to truth.(Compound) In this world of conditioning, the Controllers keep any kind of truth from the people. Regardless, very few actually attempt to discover the truth.
Discrimination increases awareness of the non-white
Growing up I always believed that hard work and dedicate were the keys to success, yet I was unaware that social location played any part in advantages or disadvantages that people had. I think that part of this is because I grew up in a family of fairly privileged people. Perhaps if I were a different race or ethnicity or even sexuality I would have experienced oppression more closely, but because I was from a privileged group, I was ignorant to what was going on around me. Learning more about oppression has helped me see my own privilege as well as the oppression that others face every day. This has shown me how truly lucky
