Loss of innocence Imagine that you are on an island and all of the survivors from the plane crash were kids. But as time progresses on the island, they become murderous savages. What could cause innocent kids to become murderers? From the novel the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the kids survive a plane crash and have to work together to help survive and hopefully be rescued. There are three factors that influence the kids on the island to lose their innocence which is decision making, completion, and leadership that is portrayed through the characters Jack and Ralph. The first good piece of evidence is decision making. To start off with, Ralph’s decisions that he made were, “We want to be rescued; and of course we shall be rescued… …show more content…

For Ralph’s leadership it states, “At last Ralph ceased to blow and sat there, the conch trailing from one hand,… As the echoes died away so did the laughter, and there was silence… We’re having meeting. Come and join in.” Also, “The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don’t keep a fire going? Is a fire too much for us to make?” This shows that Ralph used the conch to call for a meeting for the kids to discuss things and used his deep concerns for the fire to try to drive the other kids to work harder on it. Jack’s leadership however is, “I’m not going to be part of Ralph’s lot-… Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too.” Also, “The littluns screamed and blundered about, fleeing from the edge of the forest… Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!” And, “The twins lay, astonished, and the tribe stood around them. Jack turned to Ralph and spoke between his teeth. See? They do what I want.” Jack is power hungry and wants to be in control. He is jealous of Ralph being a leader so he makes his own tribe, all the littluns join Jack except Ralph, Piggy, and the twins Sam and Eric. When the littluns get scared, Jack uses his chant about killing the beast to influence them which leads them to murder
