Submersion
A gentle mist of water adheres to my warm face as I overlook the Louis Bridge. I can hear the fierce roar of the current beneath me. My mahogany hair is pushed back by the cool October wind. The torrent of white water splashes against the eroded grey stones that dot the river below me. The rays of orange sunlight sting my eyes as it rises in the east; just barely peaking through the ominously dark clouds. I pry my eyes away from this splendid sight and continue on my way to school. I adjust my woolen scarf so it covers a bare spot on my neck. I can feel the icy sting of the wind as it pierces through my threadbare jeans. In the distance, I hear the final bell ringing; I 'm going to be late once again.
My legs ache as I climb higher, each step posing as its own challenge. My steps echo through the silent hallways as I head to my locker. I turn the dial on my lock and pause briefly as I recall the last digit of the combination. I knock twice on the door to my math class and then enter. Thirty pairs of eyes are glued on me as I slide into my chair; the third seat in the penultimate row. The substitute teacher drones on about some complicated formula I will probably never use in my entire life. I

The chill of the house compels me to put some clothes on. I pull my cherished hoodie out of the drawer. The tag on it reads extra-large. I tear it out and throw it in the trash can. Once I pull it over my head, I can already feel the warmth of the fleece enveloping me. I put my sweatpants on and walk over to my bookshelf. I will try to clear my mind by picking up my beloved novel, In The Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick. This will be the hundredth time I read it. The first chapter bores me and drags on. I get antsy and put the book down. it seems as though my burning passion for literature is dying out, I cannot seem to concentrate on the very novel that enraptured me and took me away from reality and transported me to a wonderful place when times were
