1844-185 Louis David Riel, a Canadian figure, died at the age of 41 on Monday, November 16, 1885 due to his execution for treason in Regina, Saskatchewan. Born on October 22, 1844 to Louis Riel Sr. and Julie Lagimodiere in St. Boniface, Red River settlement. Being born in 1844, he was the eldest of his siblings, seven sisters and four brothers. Louis was constantly around the Metis people and growing up he never felt tied to one identity, he only felt mixed, which he had inherited from his father’s side. Louis Riel spent a vast amount of his childhood surrounded in academics. He was very keen on his education and has proven to be a gifted and noteworthy student. Is he a good or bad person? Louis Riel, a leader of the Metis, fighting against the Canadian government to earn their rights. Does the man who wanted nothing but equality for the Metis deserve to be called bad and does the man who hung another man because of disagreement deserve to be called good? There are many different portrays on the Metis and there are multiple “truths”. People’s opinions recognize the history and even though they’re different, they all have convincing facts. The reasoning behind why people thought he was a “villain” or a “traitor” was the fact that he was a Canadian. When Louis Riel stormed up a rebellion, and acted in a prejudicial manner to stand with Metis, he was going against his own kind. The government began to call him a traitor and many citizens went along. However, not everyone thought like this, many saw him for the charitable person he was and were moved by him. Yes, he was considered a Canadian, but, he was also a part of the metis and showed numerous times to feel more comfortable with that “label”. He rebelled because of him and many others, they felt it was the right thing to do. It was in not their intentions to displease or offend the government, they just wanted the rights that they were worthy of. So, to answer the question of was he a hero or a villain, he was both.
