In the field of biology, one of the most prominent ideas expressed is the concept of the two principles to life. These principles include survival as the first, then reproduction as the second. So, how come many Americans prioritize their happiness over their health? With most of the population participating in detrimental health habits such as eating junk food, doing drugs, and drinking alcohol, it has become extremely apparent that the focus of human life in America has shifted. This is simply due to the fact that in America, surviving and reproducing is not all that hard to achieve leaving people with no true purpose. This concept dates all the way back to ancient times where the only way one could experience joy was through talking with others. As the world became more technologically advanced, face-to-face interaction has faded. Nonetheless, humans still strive to connect with one another through social media and the internet. This has begun the phenomenon that is online dating. Since love is the highest form of human connection, it creates the greatest sensation of happiness leaving every individual desperate for love. The relationship between love and happiness has been proven by researchers at Harvard Medical School stating, “When we are falling in love, chemicals associated with the reward circuit flood of our brain, producing a variety of physical and emotional responses -- racing hearts, sweaty palms, flushed cheeks, feelings of passion and anxiety,” (Edwards, 2). That feeling of having a crush is all chemical. Although, these chemicals and feelings do not contribute to survival, they can contribute to the second purpose of life, reproduction. The feeling of happiness and satisfaction created when with a loved one promotes the idea of sexual intercourse therefore directly contributing to the reproduction of our species. Restaurants such as McDonald’s and Wendy’s serve kids’ meals filled with fatty food, sugar-based treats, and fun toys; McDonald’s even dubbed theirs as “Happy Meals”. In a study based in Taiwan, it was found that the children eating junk food were found more at risk for obesity, yet they were less unhappy. This fact is not an unknown fact, parents all over America know that fast food makes their children happy as the New York Times has stated, “Our children have made it clear, what with their clamoring for chocolate and McDonald’s. That’s because fat and sugar taste good,” (Belkin, 5). While famous individuals like Michelle Obama do endorse healthy lifestyles for children, unfortunately America will not listen. The reason for this is because most of these healthy diets include cutting out almost all bad fats and sugars in one’s life when moderation is key. These “bad” substances can contribute to a healthy lifestyle as long as the portion size remains a bit smaller and consistent. For example, dark chocolate is a great source of antioxidants and healthy fats, but can be detrimental only if too much is consumed in one sitting.
