While they are conversing, Beatrice plainly states that she wants Benedick to “kill Claudio...a villain, that hath slandered, scorned, dishonoured [her] kinswoman (Shakespeare 74-75).” Beatrice makes very bold actions, and she is not afraid of doing so. This shows how Beatrice and Hero are foils of each other because Hero takes actions that are safe and pleasing to others, while Beatrice does what she wants and doesn’t care about what others think of her actions. Another example of this occurs during the Masquerade Ball. Beatrice talks with Don Pedro and is quoted to have said, “My cousin tells him in his ear that he is in her heart (Shakespeare 27).”
The play Cyrano de Bergerac is about a love triangle between Roxane, Cyrano, and Christian. Christian and Cyrano desire Roxane’s love, but Christian has the upper hand because of his outer beauty. Cyrano writes letters conveying his love to Roxane, but allows Christian to use them as his own. Christian wins Roxane’s heart by deceit and eventually realizes that Roxane only loves the fake version of him. Although Christian uses Cyrano, he is a noble and honest man because he wants to tell Roxane regardless of how he feels about her.
Cyrano de Bergerac is a play written by Edmond Rostand that follows Cyrano, a Renaissance man with high esteem, but he has a huge nose that holds him back from doing many things, because he feels that he is ugly. Despite this, he is an accomplished poet, one who is great at being able to say what he feels. Cyrano loves his cousin Roxane, who is an intelligent and beautiful woman. The only problem is that Roxane loves Christian, who is the total opposite of Cyrano. He is handsome, but he is terrible with words.

Despite being written in 1897 Rostand’s play is relevant today because it shows how humans want a perfect significant other and desperately search for an impossible dream of finding someone with both inner and outer beauty.
Shakespeare has a way of making his plays have a whole array of themes and perspectives to see the story from. One can argue that the main theme can usually be something along the lines of Love or Deception or even Honor. In particular, looking at Much Ado About Nothing, you can apply the same. I would argue that shakespeare chose to develop the theme of deception throughout this play. In particular, the way that Beatrice and Benedick end up falling in love is all thanks to deception.
What is love? There are many ways American Literature has portrayed the idea of love, and how it works. Several pieces of American Literature demonstrate the theme of love; this is shown in Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, “Annabelle Lee”, by Edgar Allan Poe, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag and Mildred Montag, a married couple, represent what love is not about.
In Much Ado About Nothing, the relationship between Benedick and Beatrice develops throughout the course of the play. As their relationship develops from hatred to friendship to romance, these characters are forced to make sacrifices in order to make room for the new love in their lives. Benedick, in particular, makes a sacrifice out of love that shows the powerful impact of love on his life. Benedick’s willingness to sacrifice his friendship with Claudio for Beatrice demonstrates the emboldening, life-changing impact that love has on a person’s values and loyalties. Benedick’s loyalties completely shift from his fellow soldiers to Beatrice after he and Beatrice profess their love for each other.
Even though this “war” happens amongst them, it is obvious that they care for one another or else they would not continue the fight; realistically, they would have ceased communication years before. Their relationship, through the war of wits was only seen as deceptive to themselves. Beatrice and Benedick constantly lie to themselves about their feelings towards the other, while their true emotions are apparent to anyone from the outside looking in. It is obvious from the beginning of the play, that the truth of their emotions would be revealed purposely or unintentionally by themselves or those around them. Their ironic nature towards each other, though seen as somewhat deceitful is more honest than their counterparts of Hero and Claudio who solely act upon opinions and rumors of
When Hero and Claudio relationship fell apart from a very ridiculous reason, Benedick and Beatrice stayed strong by each other side. Beatrice even though always believe in the independent life now she finally admits to Benedick that she loves him when she states, “As strange as the thing I know not. It wee as possible for me to say I loved nothing as well as you, but believe me not, and yet I lie not, I confess nothing, not I deny nothing. I am sorry for my cousin. ”(4,1,283-287).
In the books Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing the plots are may be different but there is one underlying concept in both of the books. Love, in addition to the many other pieces of the plot, is a very common theme in Shakespeare's works. Whether the type of love drives someone to kill themselves over it or if it leads to a successful relationship until they die Shakespeare showed there are different levels of love, like doting, immature love and mature love to the readers through Hero and Claudio's story and Romeo and Juliet's story. First, the definition of dote according to Merriam Webster is to be lavish or excessive in one's attention, fondness, or affection —usually used with on.
Relationships based on love, like Benedick and Beatrice 's, have a strong foundation that will stand the test of time since they are rooted in love. Benedick and Beatrice 's relationship showed that love and friendship being involved in a relationship is both healthy and necessary. True love involves more than just the physical attraction Hero and Claudio experience. Without being able to relate to a person on an intellectual and emotional level, there 's no way the relationship will be able to overcome any problems. Despite Beatrice’s request for Benedick to challenge Claudio and Hero’s shame weighing heavily on them, their relationship still prevailed.
Benedick spent quite a while saying that he would never get married; he even went as far to say that he would “die a bachelor,”(II.iii.25). But, after overhearing Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato discuss Beatrice’s love for him, his perception on the idea of marriage changed, which they were quite aware of. While commenting on Benedick’s appearance, Claudio states, “I hope he be in love,”(III.ii.28) to which Benedick replied, “ I have the toothache,”(III.ii.28). It is clear that Benedick was trying to change the subject to avoid discussing his interest in Beatrice out of embarrassment for his feelings. When it comes to learning about the characters in a story, analyzes look at the characters’ characterization through the plays. For Shakespeare, he focused on the relationships of his characters in his plays to underline the true meaning of love. From his comedic plays to his tragedies, the love between two or more characters signified an irrational and crazy way love operates in his plays. In his play, Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare described the typical “perfect” couple, Hero and Claudio, and the “surprising” couple, Benedick and Beatrice. In Act 4, these relationships are put to the test whether their relationships are true and honest after the wedding.
It was a set up marriage and she would just try to make the male proud. Relationships, in the modern day, are more egalitarian than they use to be. This allows Benedick and Beatrice to represent more of a modern time ideal couple, than Claudio and Hero. A great quote about relationships is “ Respect is as important as love in a relationships”
Love is a complicated affair, it involves the two lives of the couples and the lives of everyone around them. There are many factors that could break or make a relationship, for one to be successful they must be able to succeed in all of those factors. Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest delves into these factors regarding love and marriage. Wilde stresses the importance of social status and gender expectations as a key guideline for a successful marriage. For Wilde, social status is defined as birth, wealth, and power.
