Abstract
Education of low-income families is a current tragedy in the higher education system. The low acceptance rate of elite schools reflects that students who came out from low-income families were been discriminated and has less opportunity and chances to admit in universities. It turns out that financial situation now became the most common problem that low-income student have to face. The obstacles not only occurs at admissions process, but also after when low-income students are admitted, how can the school support them to find the proper financial aid to help them succeed. Different to the 1960s and 1970s in which race was the most direct reason about education success, today, the income of a family is the most consequential factor why poor families are inferior to wealthy families in education system. Furthermore, the income inequality is the core reason making the education system imbalanced. Author mentioned the book of research “Whither Opportunity?” complied by Russell Sage Foundation points out, there is an obvious contrast between high-income families who invest more money for gaining a better opportunity and low-income families like single parents who struggle for getting resource and time. The article also indicates the children born in affluent families spend 1300 more hours than poor families outside their homes. They could absorb more knowledge and experience more than the child born in poor families. It results in wealthy families could put their children in a better position in the starting line, and be well-prepared than kids who were poor. Moreover, since this phenomenon forms a cultural divide like educated people married to educated people, and rich people married to rich people.
