Vietnamese Knowledge Characteristics

According to the American Institute of Social Research, the Vietnamese people have 10 major characteristics. The fifth characteristic listed is Vietnamese people love knowledge and have quick understanding but hardly learn from the beginning to the end of things, so their knowledge is not systemic or fundamental. In addition, Vietnamese people do not study just for the sake of knowledge (when small, they study because of their families; growing up, they study for the sake of prestige or good jobs). Actually, these are two assumptions contained both positive and negative sides. It is difficult to appraise exactly knowledge of one person, not to mention knowledge of a nation. They hold the view that knowledge is one of the initial aspects of the ideal man. Learned people are often treated with highly respect and have great prestige in community. In this country, there are many temples built to commemorate venerable scholars and great teachers of history like Viet Nam Temple of Literature, Chu Van An temple, Truong Han Sieu temple, etc. Many roads also are named according to name of these scholars. In feudal system, the scholar ranked first, following are farmer, artisan, and tradesman. The temptation of reputation and the prospect of enhancing social position are among the strongest incentives to the pursuit of knowledge. Education represents the indispensible cornerstones to the ladder of fame and to good job opportunities. It is the prime force of vertical mobility in Vietnamese society. It can be explained that Vietnamese culture and general education is dramatically affected by Confucianism in China, which dignify theory than practice and has obvious social class stratification through education. People once pursuit system of former competition-examinations like their most elevated aim because of government’s honor for passing examination. Unfortunately, this backward educational philosophy still exists in Vietnamese educational system until now with regard in qualifications rather than knowledge. Not only impose a strongly conceptual system, in general, Vietnamese education bases on test score rather than encourage human being comprehensive development, innovate and the freedom to create . Therefore, most young generation and their parent nowadays misconceive about the adequate purpose of learning. Under pressure of parents and schools about test score and good job, many students give up themselves passionate and run after money and
