My parents always pester me and say, “We are not American, we are Vietnamese.” This has always been a strange concept to me since I consider myself both American and Vietnamese. I am involved in two cultures, Vietnamese-American culture. Vietnamese and American cultures are different, however they share similarities. Vietnamese culture components are music, work ethic and emotional intimacy. A common type of music is Folk, they usually tell a story like falling in love or life as a peasant. I continue practicing Vietnamese so I am able to understand Vietnamese better. My dad is always playing music not only to help me better understand the language but for me to understand his past. Along with music, Vietnamese people encourage work ethic. It is ideal put in your best effort and get the best results. Vietnamese people don't get acknowledged for being diligent in fact; it is expected to have a good work ethic. My dad is respected by his friends and colleagues because he came to the United States with no money, and little knowledge of the culture but managed to find success. American families are free to speak their mind and share their problems to each other. As a family, they’ll try and work it out together. In the same way Americans are affectionate, they also applaud kids for doing their work even if it is not done well. They praise giving your best effort it doesn’t matter if you failed because the lesson learned is better than the goal. Additionally the United States is a diverse country with many different races it is one of the most diverse countries in the world. Living in the United States I have been exposed to many different cultures other than my own. While Americans are different from Vietnamese people they have similar ways on how they view their
