I like this chapter because it teaches readers to expose their opponent 's weak spot and use it in an argument against them As a student I concede that I did not enjoy reading this book. However I feel that it taught me some new skills that will help me in the long run. Not only did I learn some new things, but I was able to do it on my own. Discontinuing the use of “Thank You for Arguing” would take away class time that should be allotted for other things and uses it to teach rhetorical tools that could be learned over the summer by having students read
In their Introduction to the “They Say /I Say” book, Gerald Graff and Cathy Brikenstein strongly believe that their templates will improve the reader’s writing skills. Graff and Brikenstein insist that writing is just like an activity we are used to do continuously, and if we follow certain process, we improve our writing and “help [our] writing become more original and creative.” (11) The authors also added that writers must give the opposing argument (they say) and then comes the thesis, which “should always be a response to the arguments of others.” (4) Personally, I agree with most of the points that the authors argued about.
Santos talked about a race war and a riot that occurred one day and I related to the videos that we watched on the riots in prison. Seeing the videos in class and then reading as he described what happened really connects the class and the book well. I understand more on why riots occur and there are countless of reasons and I think race does play a huge role in that aspect. Being locked up everyday and being ordered around by guards is not something the inmates like and to see a rival gang in prison everyday, it can get tense. Also, talking about the inmate code we can really see how if you don’t follow it there will be punishment.
After reading it I do not view our society the same, and I most definitely do not view our education system the same. I will take what I learned from this story and apply it in my classroom as a teacher. I will be empathetic towards each and every student and their family and where they come from. There is value in every culture and if we take the time to understand it we will build more relationships than we could ever imagine. Chapter 4 is much similar to the previous chapters as it begins by narrating the schooling differences between upper and lower class children. This chapter discusses three students who have different experiences due to social class. These students are going to two different schools, Troy High School and Santa Ana High School. These two schools greatly differ as Troy is top-ranked high school nationally, as it offers many Advanced Placement classes, science and technology program, and at least 99 percent of the students continue their schooling in college. While Santa Ana High School is a lower ranked school as the location is in a very poor and dangerous neighborhood that includes people that are into drugs, crime, and violence, and academics

A class novel should include real world situations to open students' eyes to social issues around them and help them better understand what is going on. As students, we are still children growing up and trying to figure out our way around the world. Being introduced to real world problems at a young age makes us develop into more aware adults.

But that confidence soon began to subside. In elementary school, we would have an annual test that determined whether a student can be placed in an advance or tutorial reading class, and every year I would be placed into the advance reading courses, so when it came time to take the test, I knew there wasn’t anything for me to worry about. And even though my score was one of the highest in the class, I still ended up in a reading tutorial class. I was a little taken aback by it, but it didn’t stop me from my love of reading and writing and plus I could switch out of those classes is I showed improvement. My first reaction to having to read True Education by Ellen G. White was “oh great, I have to read another Ellen White book.” Throughout my life I was preached at about how Ellen White said such and such, meaning if I do not follow what she says I am a rebelious and unrighteous person. With this being said, I am glad that I was able to put my negative thoughts aside and dig deep into the topics, because after reading the book I have gained some new ideas and perspectives on how to go about educating in the classroom. However, I am only going to focus on the few that really stuck out to me. Some of them being able to comprehend the nature of human beings and their purpose, using several different teaching tactics, and the need for teachers and parents to work together.
