Are you so loyal to someone or something that you are willing to devote most of your time to that one person or thing? How much would you sacrifice for that one person or thing? In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare the two star-crossed lovers are loyal to each other but are they too loyal? Loyalty can be both good and bad. It can allow a person to rely on someone or something to help them get through tough times or that person can be too loyal causing unfortunate circumstances. While Friar is telling the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet to the families he begins by saying “Romeo, there dead, was husband to that Juliet, / And she, there dead, that Romeo’s faithful wife” (V.3.240-241). Both Romeo and Juliet killed themselves when they learned the other was dead. Romeo and Juliet were so caught up in emotions they each thought the best option was to go with the other. Both Romeo and Juliet were way too loyal to each other which lead to both of their deaths. Committing suicide because you are too loyal to a significant other should not be the first option, it should never even be an option. Juliet also decided to beguile her family and then leave to be with Romeo. Juliet being too loyal to Romeo would have caused her to lose her family. Family is priceless. Juliet, if she were still alive and lived on with Romeo, would maybe never see her family again. Furthermore, the Chorus introduced the families by saying they are similar and have a lot in common then stated “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny” (Prologue.3). From a long time ago a grudge has been passed on from generation to generation and this is the start of a new generation of hatred for one another. The Montagues and Capulets are too loyal to their past and trust that something must have happened to influence the hatred, but neither know what that incident was. The families
