Weyerhaeuser and his parents purchased more than 200, 000 acres of Timberland in the central part of the state. More than 400 lumber companies were operating in Minnesota. Other cities throughout the Midwest used the Minnesota lumber company. Flower and lumber industry's we're really close in similarities. It wasn't until the 1800s that lumber company started making investments cutting down trees to produce lumber.
From 1865 to 1900 agriculture was at war, shifting from small, individual farms to larger commercialized farms because of the devaluing of currency, competition from corporate farms with more land and better technology, and government policies that proved detrimental to those clinging to old ways of life. To escape debt and seek profit in new lands, many farmers started working westward but so did corporations looking to expand. Because of westward expansion, companies like the union pacific railroad company built railroads that connected lands all across the U.S. and earned 10 miles of land in either direction of the railroad. This land put the railroad in control of many western lands and in control of the prices of land, travel and resource transportation.
There have been steam engine trains trailing the United States in the early 1800’s. Many of the early ones ran only a few dozen miles. When the railways ran longer distances, the cost to build and later ride them were be extremely high. They needed a fast way to transport people and goods all around the country, especially between major cities, a great example of this being accomplished is the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. On account of the demand of railroads, there was also a demand for people to work on and build the railroads throughout the country. Railroad work opened up an abundant amount of jobs all around the country which was positive for the nation, but for the people working it was a very physically intensive job and low paying.
There were many changes brought about during the the time of the Westward Expansion in the United States of America. One of those changes is with the invention of the steel plow. The steel plow was one of the most revolutionary invention in the era of the Westward Expansion. This wouldn’t have been possible though with out John Deere. John Deere and the invention of the steel plow has brought a big positive impact during the time of the Westward Expansion and still today.
Intro: When people eat food they do not think about what is in it, or how it is made. The only thing people care about is what the food tastes like and how much they get. During the 1900’s the meat packing industry had not regulations of any kind. All that mattered to the industry was that they made as much money as possible with as little expenditure as possible. During this times people were often made sick and died either from working conditions or poor food quality.
The pioneer families lived very differently in Nebraska during the 19th century. While we now have the comfort of an insulated homes and lots of food, the pioneer families had to cope without those luxuries. Among other things, the pioneers had to survive with sod houses, extreme weather, and lack of good food. One of the things the pioneers in Nebraska had to survive with were sod houses.
