Lymphovenous Bypass
WHAT IS LYMPHOVENOUS BYPASS?
The lymphatic system is not very well known, but it is vital to the operation of the human body. It works alongside the bloodstream absorbing any leaked fluid from the blood vessels, this is known as lymph. Lymph nodes filter the lymph and put it back into the blood, but if these lymph nodes are damaged or removed the result is lymphedema, which is the swelling of a limb creating pain and immobility.
Lymphovenous Bypass is a microsurgical procedure that opens pathways for blocked lymphatic vessels in the lymphatic system. The results of this procedure are a reduction in limb volume and a decreased reliability on physical therapy (for lymphedema).
STEPS OF LYMPHOVENOUS BYPASS
1. The patient is put under anesthesia
2. Incisions are made

The doctor looks through a microscope to monitor the procedure.
4. The doctor uses instruments to connect blocked lymphatic vessels to a neighboring vein. (The swelling experienced while having lymphedema is due to the buildup of lymph. This procedure allows the built up lymph to flow more easily.)
5. The doctor then puts in some stitches for the incisions to heal
6. The infected limb will be wrapped; the wrap will need to be worn for approximately 3 weeks.
7. There is little pain after the procedure; usually patients leave the same day or the next morning.
RISKS OF LYMPHOVENOUS BYPASS
These risks are very uncommon, but are a possibility. The risks of lymphovenous bypass are infection or the lymphedema getting worse.
