Martin Luther King uses loaded words to create pathos when he wrote " Letter from Birmingham Jail. " One way he uses loaded words is when he says " vicious mobs lynch your mother's and father's." This creates pathos because lynching implies hanging colored folks. Back then lynching was very common and not a good thing. So when you hear the word lynch it invokes a depressing feeling in you as long as you know what the word means.
The cry has also been associated with various effects, and this is because the lynch law was being implemented at any time wherever the concerns was linked to the Afro-Americans. The fourth chapter of the book is “the malicious and untruthful white press.” This is a chapter of the book that covers how the white press was spreading lies about the Afro-Americans at the time.
The book, The Forgotten Dead by William D. Carrigan and Clive Webb, tells of the Mexican lynch victims from the 19th and 20th century whose stories’ were lost to history. The main idea of the book is to show the reason why Mexicans were lynched and to show how their under representation was due to the lack of documentation of their deaths. According to the authors, the book’s purpose is to unravel why the victims were lynched, why the witnesses of the murders did not share the victims’ stories, how their “fellow Mexicans” reacted to these lynching’s and what the meanings behind their deaths were (Carrigan et al). The book wants to get to the root of why the Mexicans lynched were not as acknowledged as other races; for example the African Americans’ lynched. In essence, the book is entitled The Forgotten Dead because “more than almost all other victims of lynching, Mexican victims have been the “forgotten dead” (Carrigan et al 13).
There were a handful of reasons that a person would be punished with death. The emancipation of the African Americans really began the acts of “conscienceless outlawry.” The fact that the white man had no right to scourge an emancipated African American gave him more fuel to want to convert and agree with lynching. To begin with the reasoning behind the lynching was to avoid race riots. The second reason was because of the right of an African American man to vote.
Public Spectacle Lynchings. Large crowds of white people, often numbering in the thousands and including elected officials and prominent citizens, gathered to witness pre-planned, heinous killingsthat featured prolonged torture, mutilation, dismemberment, and/or burning of the victim. White pressjustified and promoted these carnivallike events, with vendorsselling food, printers producing postcards featuring photographs of the lynching and corpse, and the victim’s body parts collected as souvenirs. The Whites thought that the Blacks should be below them and they needed the laws to keep it that way. Many times if a Jim Crow law was not followed by a person of color they would be lynched. Lynchings were public, often sadistic, murders carried out by mobs. Between 1882, when the first reliable data were collected, and 1968, when lynchings had become rare, there were 4,730 known lynchings, including 3,440 black men and women.
4,743 lynchings occurred in the United States from 1882-1968, of these people that were lynched, 3,446 were black. Lynching is a tragedy of our Nation’s past time, although tempting to try and erase it from the history books, it must be remembered to attempt to prevent such injustices from happening again. In Ida B. Wells’ speech, “Lynch Law in America.” Ida B. Wells talks about the discrimination and horrendous crimes black people face due to racist white men and a corrupt justice system. The laws created to protect the African Americans; 14th and 15th amendment was ignored, or loopholes were being used to justify the mainly Southerner’s actions.

The Jim Crow laws are laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. It used the term separate but equal, even though conditions for African Americans were always worst than their white counterparts. They could not eat at the same restaurant as white people, they could not used the same restrooms, and they couldn't even use the same drinking fountain.

The article argues that the courts should only view harmful speech in the same eyes and rule them the same as if they were conduct harms. The source then discusses how many scholars believe that freedom of speech only applies when the benefits outweigh the harms, regarding what is being said. The article does a good job of approaching the problem through a semi-neutral lens. The article clearly lets its opinion be known at times; however, it approaches the opposite side of the argument in a fair manner. The article will be incredibly beneficial because it discusses when freedom of speech should not apply with a neutral approach.
This same effort is being attempted today by Donald Trump and his legislation in order to appeal to his supporters opposed to abortions and the federal funds that they assume contribute to so. Political viewpoints should not cause infliction with basic human rights
Lynching was something horrific that happened a lot in the 1900s in the South(mostly) but many other states as well. Lynching is a root from slavery and was a racialized violence to blacks. This is something that continues in todays world. Several authors wrote and continue to write about the terrible process of lynching; from slavery, segregation, and today's racialized violence. One reading that stood out to me was "Big Boy Leaves Home," by Richard Wright.
