Lyndon B Johnson was Americas 36th President. His love for politics was first introduced to him by his father Sam Huston Johnson who himself was a politician. Lyndon Johnson was not a man raised by wealthy means, in fact quite opposite to the point where his father was forced to sell the family farm. As Lyndon Johnson began his political career he had promised himself that he would not fall into his father’s failure. In many ways LBJ’s fear of failure fueled his obsession for success. Lyndon Johnson was a driven young man with motive and high drive. At age 28 he would campaign as a FDR liberal new dealer, reaching out to farmers and the poor. Lyndon Johnson had an ability to attach himself to power by getting to know his audience and his peers. He knew people desires, wishes, and dreams which allowed him room to negotiate and come to a compromise. This key trait lead him to be such a great congressman, senator and overall politician. After being accepted into congress then began his journey of running for Texas senator. The Brown brothers from Brown and Root construction helped fund Johnson campaign for senate. Lyndon’s conservative competitor Governor Pappy Lee O’Daniel had won the election by about 13,011 this devastated Johnson but didn’t keep him from running a second time. This time around he ran extravaganzas to get the people’s attention as well as traveling to campaigns with his helicopter. This showed how he as willing to try different methods in order to get his name out. However, there was some controversy on the 1948 senator’s election between Lyndon and Coke Stevenson. Lyndon had won the election by 87 votes as well as the skeptical name of “Land slide Lyndon”. He always knew where the power was and used his persuasive and personal relationships to get him were he needed to go. Had promised the nation that he would finish Kennedys work to end the war but it only leads to LBJ’s swift downfall. Originally LBJ had little interest in the war in Vietnam instead was more focused on the war on poverty. His vision of presidency was known as creating the great society. Lyndon Johnson tried to only hold off Vietnam as long as he possibly could and distracted the American people by passing bill after bill after bill. Bills were passed on funding education, helping the elderly, beautification protection in hopes that the American people would acknowledge what he did accomplish. He kept Americans ignorant about the raids he had ordered overseas to Vietnam sinking and crippling foreign ships. Once Vietnam had attacked back Lyndon had announced on August second that the “attacks on U.S were unprovoked”. Many citizens took the President Johnsons word. Johnson only escalated America’s involvement in the war which lead to the congresses passing of the Golf of Tonkin Resolution which was basically a declaration of War.
