The United States provided almost all of South Vietnam’s artillery while the Soviet Union and China supplied North Vietnam. The United States side is best known for its M-16 rifle which was designed as the ideal weapon to navigate through Vietnam's jungle terrain. This was the weapon of choice for marksmen in the U.S. army and marine corps. The M-16 was accurate but because battle usually consisted of short range battle and surprise attacks North Vietnam decided “the volume of fire, rather than accurate, aimed fire, was more important in determining the outcome” (Zabecki), and decided their men should be armed with an automatic-firing weapon.
