Definitions of multicultural Competence Frontline Human Service Providers, was collaboratively written by L. Caldwell, D. Tarver, D. Iwamoto, S. Herzberg, P. Cerda-Lizarraga, and T. Mack. The article was published by the journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development. This article explores different definitions provided by ninety nine different human service providers who are on the frontline serving in the helping capacity. All information they have in counseling was gain from firsthand experience. Color blindness, client focused, acknowledgement of cultural differences, textbook consistent, resources driven, skills-based, and self-integrated, are used throughout the article as terms that are frequently used to define multicultural.
This self-awareness should include continuously examining their own development and unexamined personal trauma, as well as, personal biases, ideas, values, and beliefs related to culture, crisis, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and suicide. Counselors should also practice self-awareness related to their own knowledge and level of competence in providing crisis services. Lastly, self-awareness should include monitoring their personal reactions to the trauma and crisis they are working with, changes to their own personal schema, and failures to address personal issues (Sartor, 2016). By engaging in self-awareness, the counselor can provide appropriate services to assist the client, rather than cause harm. Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
As a woman of color, I believe it is essential that I become aware of my own biases in order to help individuals that have different beliefs, values, and cultural practices. When I was done completing the “Multicultural Counseling Competencies: A Self Examination” assessment, I became aware of my strengths, weaknesses, and areas where I need to grow as a future college counselor. To begin with, I notice that I questioned myself continuously whether I take the time to evaluate the limits of my competency when helping a student from a different cultural heritage from mine.
Authors Pompeo and Levitt (2014) define self-reflection as the conscious decision that which an individual acknowledges and evaluates their actions. Thus, these said actions could include being forthcoming about the intentions and motives that are considered personal benefits. In addition, the center of self-reflection consists of the individual’s emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Universally goals that counselors should incorporate in conjunction with adhering to self-reflection include conscious awareness, thoughts, and feelings (Pompeo & Levitt, 2014). Both self-reflection and self-awareness are routine developments that are utilized to assist counselors with becoming proficient in cultural practices.

A personal philosophy of counselling Introduction My personal odyssey into the realm of counselling has been quite the reluctant adventure. The perilous journey from childhood to adulthood was difficult to navigate given the cognitive map that had been handed down. My father was a functioning alcoholic who was both physically and verbally abusive. My mother was a martyr prone to mood swings and suicidal thoughts.
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.

The problem was not that the text on multicultural counseling failed to address me as an ‘ethnic’ minority or that my position was lost between the black and white, but rather, why we need to identify our selves on the basis of our ‘race’ or colour?. As I thought about my own childhood and origin, I realise that I was brought up with strong humanistic values, by both rational parents that were not ‘religious’. Although I am a Muslim and was brought up as one but with hen site I can see that I was brought up with a deeply developed conscious and inward teaching of Sufism which is the heart of Islam.
Multicultural Education: Theory and Application For the purpose of this study, Multicultural Education as conceptualized by Banks (1984) and complimented by Campinha-Bacote’s Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare, partially forms the theoretical framework. In this semester, I have been exposed to the subject of Introduction to Guidance and Counselling which is a new field of study for me. After I have received this lesson, I can relate my experiences with what I have learned. Not only that, I also have different perspective towards after I learned this subject. The aspects that I can relate my experiences and thoughts with are the differences between advice, guidance and counselling as well as the goals of counselling.
