This is a quote from a famous play written by William Shakespeare titled Macbeth. "That is a step on which I must fall down, or else o'erleap, for in way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires (Shakespeare). The play revolves around the ambitious Scottish General, Macbeth, who receives prophecies from 3 witches foretelling his rise to power. Encouraged by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he sets out on a path of treachery, deceit, and murder to seize the throne. That phrase is often taught and studied as a significant moment in the play. After becoming king, Macbeth becomes increasingly paranoid about the witch’s prophecy that Banquo’s descendants will inherit the throne. Macbeth orders the murders of Banquo and Fleance (Banquo’s son). The assassins manage to kill Banquo while Fleance manages to escape. Another example of unjustified and unnecessary killings would be the murders of the Macduff family. Macbeth orders the death of Macduff’s innocent wife, their children, and the servants after identifying Macduff as a threat to him.
