“No amount of regret can change the past, no amount of anxiety can change the future”-(Salmonson). Throughout the text, Macbeth ultimately comes to regret what he committed and wishes it had never occurred. In 1606 William Shakespeare penned the tragedy Macbeth, which is set in medieval Scotland. The play depicts Macbeth's ascent to power following the fulfillment of a prophecy he was given by three witches, as well as the consequences of his acts and his craziness. Macbeth attempted to control the future and bury the past in a way to protect himself from his actions by manipulating others, killing the king, and the predictions of the witches. Macbeth is trying to manipulate others to bury the past. Macbeth manipulates the murderers to carry out his wicked deeds in Killing Banquo and Fleance and accepts the same rhetoric that Lady Macbeth used him to murder by questioning their manhood to make them angry. “I am one, my liege, whom the vile blows and buffets of the world, hath so incensed that I am reckless what I do to spite the world”- Second Murderer (3.1.109-11). When Macbeth encounters witches who inform him of a prophecy that he will someday become king, he interprets it as a hint to influence the future. “All hail, Macbeth, that shall be king hereafter!”-Third witch (2.3.51). His mind was invaded by witches who wanted to manipulate the future to obtain power. “If chance will have me, king, why, chance may crown me, without my stir”- Macbeth (2.3.147-149). He was attempting to reflect further on the prophecy by considering how things might alter in the future.
