In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, what changes Macbeth's Appearance and Why Does Appearance Matter to Reality? How does appearance affect him as a person? Macbeth kills King Duncan in the company of Lady Macbeth. He also commanded men to drive out Banquo and kill him and his son Fleance. As a result, Banquo was killed by the murderers. Macbeth hides behind a mask to demonstrate a different look to others. Macbeth is desperately trying to involve a different personality to show that he can be the Kingship and Thane of Cawdor. Staging a fake act changes the mood of Macbeth, eventually attracting the attention of Macduff. Macbeth realizes that after killing men, he begins to realize his guilt for his appearance and deeds. After killing Duncan, Macbeth starts to express his guilt and remorse by saying, “I’ll go no more: I am afraid to think what I have done; Look on’t again I dare not”(2.2 47-49). At the banquet, Macbeth shows his different appearance to all the guests by making a toast to Banquo “I drink to the general joy o’th’ whole table/ And to our dear friend Banquo, whom we miss; Would he was here. To him and all we thirst, And to all”(3.5 89-92). These quotes explain that mask that Macbeth has to wear in front of people and guests at the banquet. He has to show his remorse in order for people to see his fake appearance. Macbeth also shows his guilt from when he murdered King Duncan, Macbeth has to face reality for what he had done, such as murdering the King and his best friend. In the end, Macbeth makes a false act by his appearance to be noticeably different from his own in order to be noble towards everyone to be the Thane of Cawdor but quickly guilt overtakes and induces guilt and paranoia into the mind of Macbeth, making his appearance fade from reality.
