A tragic hero is a protagonist character with a tragic flaw that leads to their demise. In both Macbeth and 1984 tragic heroes are present. In Macbeth, Macbeth is doomed from the start because the witches prophecies influence his future decision making. In 1984, Winston is doomed from the start because everyone is constantly being monitored so there is no way he can rebel without getting caught. Macbeth and Winston both have desires that become overpowered which causes them to do risky things.

One of them is a lapse of judgment causing the character to do something stupid. Another is bad luck brought on by their lapse of judgment.
Tragic Hero characteristics As read in Mrs. Horne’s notes (Horne, “Shakespeare’s tragic hero”), a Shakespearean tragic hero is a “man of noble stature, a man with potential greatness and tragically-flawed,” in Macbeth’s case his flaw was his lust for power, an example was his intention of killing the God-like King Duncan for power and to gain the throne. It was not compulsion to kill Duncan.
Throughout many books and movies, there always is a certain character who appears to have the qualities of a tragic hero. A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a bad judgment call that eventually leads to his or her own destruction. Both Macbeth in the play Macbeth, and Severus Snape from the movie “Harry potter and the deathly hallows: part two”, appear to have the characteristics of a tragic hero. Although Macbeth and Severus Snape both demonstrate that they are flawed and noble, it is clear that Snape is a better example of a tragic hero because Snape’s motifs are more honorable; and the audience feels pity and fear for Snape as opposed to Macbeth.

The witches are only able to influence his actions through Macbeth’s pre-existing and the three witches see that Macbeth has ambition and uses it to control his action. One, nobel structure, two a tragic flaw, three free choice, when the punishment exceeds the crime, increased awareness, and produces catharsis. Macbeth suffers from being the tragic hero of the play where he has numerous flaws but most noticeably his uncontrolled ambition and desire for power which leads to his tragic defeat.

However, I believe that the main character, Macbeth, is overall the biggest tragic hero within the play. Macbeth's selfish ambition, low self-esteem, and general obsession with more power all contributed to his grand title of being a tragic hero.

For one to consider a play a tragedy, the character of the play must be noble, and the play typically starts off with happiness and wealth. The play ends with sadness and the hero has a tragic flaw that causes their downfall. In The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Macbeth fits the definition of an Aristotelian tragic hero. Macbeth is a tragic hero because he starts by being loyal and trustworthy, develops a tragic flaw that leads to his downfall, and he redeems a small measure of himself before he dies.
