Macbeth Fate vs. Freewill What is the difference between fate and free will? In Shakespeare's play, Macbeth it is very debatable if fate or free will is what caused Macbeth to do what he did throughout the play. Macbeth had choices to kill or not to do the things he did. He chose to do the wrong thing every time knowing it only was benefiting him, but nothing else mattered to him. At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth telling her he had gotten the promotion to be named the new Thane of Cawdor. King Duncan declares he will go to the Macbeth’s castle to celebrate Macbeth’s bravery and new title. Macbeth’s wife soon tries to convince her husband to do anything necessary to become the new king. Lady Macbeth has now talked Macbeth into killing King Duncan. Macbeth would decide to do the deed, but still would hesitate if he wanted to kill the Duncan or not. While he’s on his way to King Duncan’s guest room he sees a hallucination of floating daggers. The daggers were pointing at the room Duncan slept in and they were telling him to kill Duncan. First, in Act 2 Scene 2 Macbeth had killed Duncan. He had made the decision to have Banquo killed, after he realizes that Banquo poses a threat to Macbeth’s rise to power. He choose to try and have Fleance killed too, because he was in line to become future king one day. Macbeth didn’t want a “fruitless crown.” Macbeth hired the murderers to kill them on his own he didn’t have any help to make the decision on having them killed. Macbeth had also never told Lady Macbeth about hiring the murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance. After his decision to kill Banquo Macbeth didn’t seem to care that he just had his friend killed only to benefit himself once
