In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the motif of eyes and sight is used to convey that while one can hide their sins from others, they can never truly deceive themselves. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth receives a prophecy that he will be king. As the current King, King Duncan, is thanking Macbeth for his service, Macbeth begins to conspire against him, believing this is the only way for him to become King. As he thinks, he remarks: “The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be /Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see” (1.4.59-60).
These are not considered evil until he caves into the temptation of power (Gimelli Martin 165). His weakness is shown when he makes the decision to murder King Duncan and secures the position as king. He even goes as far to murder his friend, Banquo, because he feels uneasy about his suspicions (182-183). At this point in the story he is even comparable to Satan, “Like Satan, Macbeth becomes the chief equivocator in his own hell, unwittingly uttering objective truths to his subjects even while telling subjective lies.” (183).
“Things are not always as they seem; the first appearance deceives many”. This quote was written by a Roman poet, named Phaedrus around 370 BCE, long before Shakespeare’s time. Thousands of years later, Shakespeare incorporates many deceiving motifs in Macbeth that put the words of Phaedrus into action. The use of ill-fitting clothes, sleep, and bloodshed is all examples of imagery used to illustrate that not everything that looks genuine is so. Just as clothes appear to fit well, they can be very uncomfortable at the same time.
Throughout the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare the theme, appearances can be deceiving is shown throughout many of the characters through foreshadowing. The Witches in the play have shown that appearances can be deceiving. The Witches foreshadow what is going to happen when they say “fair is foul and foul is fair” (1.1.10). This quote is an example of foreshadow because later on in the play Macbeth decides to trust the witches since he believes the witches are trustworthy. Appearances can be deceiving because Macbeth puts his faith in the witches since he believes they are trustworthy, but in reality the witches are not trustworthy at all.
Appearance vs. reality happens every day to everyone with just a look. Just a glimpse of someone's facial expression in the hall and you can tell you how things appear, but the reality could be monumentally different from the appearance. What I'm trying to convey is how no one knows someone's true feelings and thoughts by looking at the surface, their deepest desires, secrets, and struggles are locked away from the naked eye. Someone could easily be smiling but be dying on the inside, or someone can seem sane but truly be psychotic. An example of appearance vs. reality in Macbeth is how Macbeth appears to be a loyal friend to Banquo, but in reality he's plotting to eliminate him for his own benefit.
Macbeth vs. The Real World (An Analysis of Macbeth and his relation to 21st century Society) The depth of literature is greater than the depth of the greatest ocean. It goes deeper than we could possibly imagine. A classic example of great literature is Mr. William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This is play that most groundlings would have been interested in due to its murder, battling, and occasional humor.
The characters in Macbeth and how their own self-perception played out in the entirety of the play. First off, there is Macbeth himself who started out as a trustworthy, noble, and valiant gentleman, and as the play went on, he slowly spiralled into a life of murdering people or having them murdered. Then there is his wife, Lady Macbeth who was seen as an innocent, kind, and caring but, like Macbeth as their lives went on she went crazy as she couldn’t sleep properly or at all due to nightmares, it made her go insane even to the point of sleepwalking and sleep talking. All of this because the witches told Macbeth a few prophecies which he believed because he could not differentiate illusion from reality, some of the things that happened in the play only took place mainly because of his actions that forced it to come true. Self-perception in the play turned some characters of the play for the worse, because they wanted to make something come true because they were told it would happen, thus letting the witches manipulate them.
In Macbeth, I believe that Macbeth’s downfall is a result of his disruption and violation to the natural order. Furthermore, I also believe Macbeth’s loses his own reason once he defies his place in society, which is parallel to the principles of the Great Chain of Being. Another one of the tenets of the philosophy is once one abandons their place is society, they defy human nature, thus causing chaos in the natural world. The many parallels between the play and the principles of the Great Chain of Being philosophy lead me to depict this aspect of Macbeth. Lastly, a good king is Duncan. Duncan is a king who is loyal and and genres. Another reason Duncan is a good kind is, he has experience on being a king. None of the other kings have experience. One example on how he was loyal, is how he had given Lady Macbeth a gift for being the lady of the place.

But my outside behold: Gilded tombs do worms enfold.” In Macbeth, the idea that everyone is capable of great deception is explored, which is the main theme of this play Macbeth appearance versus reality, in other words hypocrisy, and facade. Using the theme appearance versus reality, this play digs deep into the darker side of humanity and the inner plotting and scheming of the human mind.

It is also the conclusion to one of the utmost crucial themes of this tragedy: appearance and reality. Shakespeare uses an assortment of characters and situations to highlight the confusion amid the real and the surreal, the fake and the authentic, the forged absolute. In order to explain this theme of appearance vs reality, different personas of the tragedy will be analyzed: the Witches, Duncan and Lady Macbeth.

The Tragedy of Macbeth incorporates character development to present William Shakespeare’s motive; throughout the play it allows the audience to see the message the play relays. The play is a tragedy and it specifically shows the tragedy of humans as they self destruct. There is a use of literary devices to create different aspects of each character allowing them to portray different images of themselves that wouldn’t be noticed initially. Compared to how the audience views each character in the beginning of the play, the image develops into something new as different aspects are revealed. The characters and their continuous changes become the essence of the play.
“Men should be what they seem,” this quote from Shakespeare’s play, “Othello” embodies what the underlying theme portrayed in the plays, “Othello” and “Macbeth” are. The play “Othello” follows a man, Iago who becomes angry and jealous of his commanding officer, Othello because he holds everything that he desires so Iago spends his life trying to ruin his happiness. Macbeth pertains to a man who strives to obtain power, but develops an influence into thinking he must kill and keep the spot on the throne to ensure his future. Both plays conceal the majority of the truth and allow chaos to occur so that the end result is what was initially planned. People manipulate others to diminish the power they possess to achieve satisfaction within themselves.
